70 Foreign Officials to Attend Home Front Drill Print E-mail

Dozens of senior military and government officials from around the world will flock to Israel next week to follow the nationwide emergency drill that will start on Sunday.

The "Turning Point 3" exercise will run from Sunday to Thursday. Government offices and 252 local councils and municipalities will open "crisis rooms" and will be asked to respond to various emergency scenarios.

During the five-day exercise, the government will be faced with a number of extreme scenarios including all-out war with Hizbullah, Syria and Hamas. On Tuesday, an air raid siren will sound nationwide and citizens are asked to enter protective rooms and bomb shelters.

The decision to allow the foreign participation was made after the Defense Ministry and the IDF Home Front Command received dozens of requests from overseas to send representatives to participate in the drill.

The ministry said that 70 officials from France, Japan, Hungary, France, Germany, Uruguay and the United States would be allowed to follow the drill. The ministry has set up a coordination team to facilitate the foreigners' needs.

The foreigners' visit will culminate in a meeting with Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilna'i to discuss emergency scenarios and the techniques developed in Israel to deal with them.

The exercise is the third home front drill to be held since the Second Lebanon War in 2006 and the founding of the Defense Ministry's National Emergency Administration, which is responsible for setting national emergency standards.
